Maya it is exciting to see you spending more and more time playing with others and starting to build friendships with children in our class.
Your sense of belonging and confidence in yourself and the kereru environment is evident in the way you look around to see what the other children are doing and then go and involve yourself in their play. Although you do sometimes like to have some quiet alone time you are seeking to play with others more and more.
Today I noticed you and Olivia sitting over on the small couches. On close inspection I noticed that you were just sitting there talking to each other. Olivia was talking to you in English and you were talking to her in Mandarin. It was such a delight to see you both simply enjoying each others company and friendship. After a while Olivia asked you if you wanted to play doctors which you replied “Ok” You thought it was a great joke when Olivia started checking your arm and then lay you down to check you over. Taking part in social play with others provides opportunities to try out different roles and to develop language and conversational skills. As Maya plays more with others she is learning about how to negotiate and co-operate with others.
Maya’s understanding of English has really taken off and we have noticed that she is understanding more and more of what the teachers and other children are saying to her.
Bob and Cherol does Maya talk about any of her Kereru friends at home?
