Maya has enjoyed participating in our Māori classes. We have used waiata (songs), karakia (prayers), stories and kēmu (games) to practice some basics. These have included counting, shapes, and colours. Along the way, students have also been exposed to common commands, greetings, and phrases of encouragement. Above everything, we have focused on correct pronunciation. Maya has been consistently engaged and positive about what we have been doing.  The content of our lessons has focused on some of the stories associated with different Cambridge place names. Out of these stories we produced a book that you hopefully saw when Maya brought hers home. Hopefully, Maya has started to appreciate some of the significance of our town and of Māori in this place.
