Maya, recently during Te Wiki o te Reo Māori language week we explored māori art and focused specifically on korus and its significance to Aotearoa. You were so excited to learn about the koru and advance your knowledge and understanding of Te Reo Māori culture and language. Maya, you first looked carefully at silver ferns and korus in nature from Whaea Liv’s presentation and then went on to practice sketching your own. You made the connection to your pepeha and thought hard about how you would incorporate specific parts into your piece. A pepeha is a way of introducing ourselves in māori. It tells people who we are by sharing our connections with the people and places that are important to us. Maya, through your koru art piece, you thought creatively of how you could incorporate aspects of your pepeha; whānau, waka, hapū or iwi, awa, maunga into your art, using colours and korus to symbolise these aspects of your pepeha. Maya, you worked hard to practice sketching your korus before moving on to your final design. You focused on ensuring your korus were the right size and in proportion to your page which you managed extremely well! While adding colour to your piece, you made specific choices around which watercolour pallets to use in your art, focusing on your foreground to ensure the korus stood out. Maya, your creative ideas shone through while you completed your art piece. Well done on completing a captivating piece of māori art! Maya, you successfully displayed our Te Ao Mārama Values of Curiosity and Creativity throughout this learning. Your kaiako could see how much thought you put into creating this piece of art, which you should be proud of! He miharo Maya! (You are amazing!)
